Program Overview

The Long Beach City College Aviation Maintenance Program is comprised of eight, 260 hour courses that operate from 7:30 A.M. to 2:30 P.M., Monday through Friday.  Each of the eight week courses are standardized to run eight weeks in length and operate for 32.5 hours per week.  The entire Airframe and Powerplant curriculum is designed to be completed in four college semesters.

Students are required to begin the Aviation Maintenance Program by first enrolling in either AVMNT 201 General Aircraft Science, if entering in the first eight-week start of the semester, or AVMNT 202 General Aircraft Maintenance, if entering in the second eight-week start of the semester.  Upon successful completion of both courses, students progress through the Airframe and Powerplant curriculum in sequence.  

Program Graduates fulfill the federal experience requirements specified under Title 14 CFR Part §65(D) to take the FAA certification exams.  Upon successful completion of these examinations, applicants may obtain Airframe and/or Powerplant (A&P) Mechanic Certificates through the Federal Aviation Administration. GENERAL

The general curriculum  is designed to provide the knowledge, background, and foundation one needs as an aircraft maintenance technician.

AIRFRAME

Our advanced airframe curriculum provide our students with the skills and techniques necessary for their careers in today's modern aviation maintenance field.

POWERPLANT

The powerplant curriculum provides our students with  the knowledge, background, and foundation one needs as an aircraft maintenance technician to inspect, repair, troubleshoot and return to service any powerplant, powerplant component or part thereof.

Curriculum Guide

  Program Graduates fulfill the Federal requirements to take the FAA certification exams.  Upon successful completion of these examinations, applicants may obtain Airframe and/or Powerplant (A&P) Mechanic Certificates.  Excellent career opportunities exist in the fields of general, corporate, military, and commercial aviation


 

UPON COMPLETION OF THE A & P MECHANIC PROGRAM, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:

1. Change aircraft equipment where weight changes are involved, accurately computing weight and balance data to the second decimal place.

2. Compute electrical problems accurately to the first decimal place.

3. Complete Form 337, Repair and Alteration Forms, as outlined in A.C. 43.13-1 Manual.

4. Troubleshoot and make repairs by reference to aircraft blueprints without assistance from other persons.

5. Maintain, repair, and inspect aircraft wood structures and aircraft fabric covering.

6. Complete an "Airworthy" sheet metal repair using layout, forming, bending, riveting procedures specified by Federal Aviation Regulation 43 & A. C. 43. 13-1

7. Inspect, ground service, and taxi single-engine aircraft.

8. Properly check and adjust control cable tensions, safety turn barrels, and control surface travel.

9. Troubleshoot aircraft electrical systems.

10. Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and pneumatic power systems and components.

11. Troubleshoot aircraft instruments, communications, and navigation systems, cabin environmental ice and rain control systems and fuel systems.

12. Troubleshoot, overhaul, and repair aircraft engines, systems, and components.

CAREER CERTIFICATE:

The Career Certificate is a one to two year program in occupational/technical areas at Long Beach City College which provides training in job skills and employment opportunities. Complete the required units with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 ("C" average), and in all FAA subject areas earn 70% or better. Submit a completed application for the certificate during the final quarter of course work; the Aviation Maintenance Department Head will then review your FAA file. Fifty per cent (50%) or more of the unit requirements for this field of concentration must be completed in residence (credit earned by exam, where applicable, may be included). Associates Degree in Aviation Maintenance, and Four year transfer programs are also available. 

NOTE:
Students with prior training at the Aviation Maintenance Technician School or with substantial experience should consult with one of the Aero Maintenance instructors or the Department Head before enrolling.


CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Students prepare to take the FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A & P) Mechanics License Test. With the A & P Mechanic’s license, men and women find excellent career opportunities in general, commercial, corporate, and military aviation.
